Mommy Brain Strikes Again

I've finally done it.  Yesterday I forgot to pick my daughter up from school. Fortunately I realized that I was supposed to be at school, not blogging about cheese, about 5 minutes after her dismissal time.  I live less than a mile from her school, so I jumped in the car and raced over and managed to be just over 10 minutes late.  My daughter was happily waiting outside with her teacher, who waved away my profuse apologies with a smile and "It happens to everyone".  So no harm done, but I'm dealing with a bit of mommy guilt -- boy do I suck.

Come to think of it, I'm a bit surprised that it has taken me all this time to forget.  I knew I was in trouble when I saw the school's kindergarten dismissal schedules.  The first two months of school were a piece of cake:  Kinders were let out at noon every day.  Then in October, they introduced minimum-day Wednesdays, when the whole school is dismissed at 1:15PM.  A month later, the teacher split her class into two groups:  The Blue Group's dismissal time from then on was to be 1:45PM ("Late Days") on Mondays and Tuesdays, and at noon ("Early Days") on Thursdays and Fridays; the Red Group had Early Days on the Blue Group's Late Days and vice versa.

So kindergarten parents have at least three dismissal times to contend with.  If your child goes directly to an afterschool care program or on-site afterschool class, or even a playdate, it just adds to all the pickup times parents need to remember.  Every day I have to remind myself what day it is, what my daughter is doing and when/where I need to pick her up.  I shudder to think what will happen when my other two children join the fray.  Parents of older kids, please hand me your wisdom!  Should I get a BusyBody Book?  Some kind of organizer/blackberry/cellphone/device that I can program to beep at me when I need to be somewhere?

It almost makes me want them to grow up and be able to get themselves to and from their various activities.  Almost.
