Mind Your Manners, Even While Blogging

Last week I posted on the issue of cyberbullying in response to the netroots campaign to support Kathy Sierra after she was cyber-harassed. When I first started blogging, I was concerned about what can happen when stepping into the open blogosphere. I found refuge taking part in BlogHer with the Silicon Valley Moms Blog, because there is always safety in numbers.

I was not surprised to see the article in the New York Times today (thanks to my hubby and GraceD for the heads up) titled: "A Call for Manners in the World of Nasty Blogs".  The article summarizes the current work being done on developing a Blogger's Code of Conduct lead by Tim O'Reilly  (oreilly.com) and Jimmy Wales (creator of Wikipedia). The article goes on to explain:

"The preliminary recommendations posted by Mr. Wales and Mr. O’Reilly are based in part on a code developed by BlogHer, a network for women designed to give them blogging tools  and to guide readers to their pages."

Shout out to Lisa Stone, Jory Des Jardins and Elisa Camahort (BlogHer Founders) for being one of the front runners in developing blogging codes of conduct, and to Tim O’Reilly and Jimmy Wales for moving the process forward. As a mom that spend lots of time each day working with her three young boys on understanding good manners, it feels great to know the blogosphere is also working on their manners.
