Brandy's Battle - Mom Bloggers Unite

Brandysbattle11 Much has been said about mom bloggers and most of it is not good.  While newspapers are focusing on the few bad apples out there, they are turning a blind eye to the warm and wonderful side of mom blogging. This community is one of the most supportive, big-hearted, and caring social groups I’ve ever been a part of. It’s a group willing to come together for various causes and one that graciously steps in without question when one of their own is in trouble.

A perfect example of the support mom bloggers provide one another is the story of Brandy’s Battle.

Brandy from Not So Average Mama had been feeling unwell for quite some time. She visited numerous specialists seeking help with her symptoms of head jerking, loss of balance, slurred speech, and inability to hold a pen. Then last Friday she woke up looking as if she was 8 months pregnant, she couldn’t keep food down, and was having trouble breathing.

She immediately went to the ER and discovered she has a tumor on her ovary the size of volleyball and it is most likely cancerous. She is only 35 years old and has 3 little girls at home.

Brandy works from home as a blogger, photographer, and graphic designer and her husband owns a construction business. Since they are both self-employed they do not have health insurance. The emergency room did what they could for her Friday night, but due to the lack of insurance, she was discharged. The ER doctors sent her home with pain relievers and they instructed her not to lie on her back. The tumor is pressing on her vena cava (a large vein that returns blood to the heart) and any additional pressure on that artery could kill her.

Distraught, she reached out to her fellow mom bloggers for ideas, suggestions, and advice. These wonderful women immediately pulled together to try and help where they could. Phone calls were made to hospitals all over Brandy’s home state, mom bloggers from Canada looked into their healthcare and temporary visa policies for her, homes were made available for her to stay in, as well as offers made to pay for her plane ticket to any hospital she needed to go to.

The mom blogger community has even taken it a step further and has rallied around Brandy by creating Brandy’s Battle – an online auction which will take place on May 23rd to raise money to save Brandy’s life. The funds will help Brandy see a specialist, have the surgery to remove the tumor, and for her post-surgical hospital stay. Many wonderful items are up for auction and donations can be made. The auction won’t even take place for another three days and already mom bloggers have donated nearly $1000 to help Brandy.

I see far too frequently, incidents of mom blogger bashing. I’ve even read that some mom bloggers are embarrassed to be labeled so. However, this is only one of many instances where mom bloggers have joined forces to provide support, help others in need, and impact society. It is caring and heartwarming stories like this that make me proud to be a part of this incredible community.

I’m honored to call myself a mom blogger and you should be too.
