Give Jillian a Break

J0443093Recently Biggest Loser Trainer, Jillian Michaels, has been attacked for a comment she made in an issue of Women's Health: "I'm going to adopt. I can't handle doing that to my body," she told the magazine.

These two tiny sentences have caused quite the uproar. Jillian is being called a hypocrite. Those with their feathers ruffled are saying that because she encourages others to move forward through tough issues with no excuses, that she should too and because she is still dealing with things from her childhood, she is just making excuses. Mothers are outraged because they believe that Jillian made this statement about herself and it applied to them. They have read into this statement to reveal that Jillian finds pregnancy revolting and something she can't control.

Jillian has responded by saying that "Mommy bloggers have broke my heart." She attempted to offer some insight into her quote by posting on Facebook, "There are emotional issues and physical LIMITATIONS that have resulted in that conclusion - some I have discussed publicly and some I haven't"

I seem to be one of the few on Jillian's side. I think it's wonderful that Jillian knows herself well enough to realize that pregnancy would dredge up old issues. How many of us moms became pregnant or had children and never dealt with our emotional baggage? How often does your past affect how you parent your child? It makes me cringe to say that I bet most of us march through life hoping our issues will just go away and that those issues directly affect how we parent our children, whether we like it or not.

Jillian has chosen to recognize that being pregnant is not something that she can handle. I think we should respect that decision and even admire her for coming out publicly with it. That she is interested in adoption is wonderful in itself. Shouldn't everyone be focusing on the fact that she knows herself and knows that adoption is the choice for her. There are millions of children out there who need homes and maybe Jillian Michaels will be able to offer a happy and healthy home for one or more of them. But if she does, that is her choice, not ours.

What do you think? Which side are you on?
