So Long Florent

Rent It's weird how a place can kind of get in your soul.  It somehow becomes a part of you, even though it's just a neighborhood haunt or a place you occasionally pass through.  Florent is that kind of place.

This popular 24 hour French diner, located in the Meat Packing District, doesn't discriminate. It seems like pretty much everyone gets slow, unreliable service whether you're a late night partier, transsexual, celebrity or a mother of two.  But there is just something so appealing about this diner... the  awesome food, the red leather seats, the eclectic mix of customers, the comfort that it is always open.

But fashion houses have moved in to this trendy area, rent has skyrocketed and now Florent is closing its doors after more than 20 years. I wonder where my husband, Rick, and I will now go at 8:30 in the morning when we want to have an early breakfast with the girls.

I remember sitting on those red leather seats on New Year's morning.  We were next to a group of guys who were wrapping up their late late night New Year’s eve partying with big breakfast plates. And one of the guys was STARING at us. He just kept looking at us.

Guy at next table: I’m sorry I’m staring at you all but I can’t help it. You are just such a beautiful family.

Me: Thanks so much. (Rick and I smiled and returned to our breakfast. I thought, WHAT A SWEET GUY! I mean, I’m not wearing any make-up except for a dash of concealer and I’m in Juicy sweats but I must still look good. Plus, the love of our family must just radiate all around us. This guy is SO nice to notice.)

Guy at the next table:  Really, you are all just so beautiful. Just a beautiful family.

Me: Oh, thanks so much.  (Ok, he’s laying it on a bit thick but still, the sentiment is perfectly lovely. And he’s clearly just overtaken by the magnificence of us.)

Rick: (under his breath) He’s on drugs.

What?! Oh snap… Of course, Rick was right. The guy was totally on drugs.

But you see, that's what I love about New York City and what I adore about Florent. In a time in my life, where there is so much predictability like laundry, bedtime routines and tanrums, it was nice to have a place that was a bit unpredictable.

We went to Florent for the last time on Father's Day.  The waiter took forever to take our order, messed up my husband's breakfast and forgot the coffees. Yeah, I just can't help it. I'm really going to miss the place.
