School Starts at 8am ?!
Yesterday, filled with excitement and joy, I went to the
open house at the school my son will be attending next year. It’s a wonderful school and a great
community and I am really looking forward to being a part of it for the next 9
years, from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
The principal talked to us ‘new parents’ about curriculum and special projects and hot lunch, the usual… And then she went through a typical day for kindergartners-
“Children can start arriving at 7:45am... and we officially start our day at 8am.”
I had seen the 8am on the sheet that was handed out, and hoped it had been a misprint…
“Oh no, it’s not a misprint,” I thought. And all of a sudden my denial was forced with the thrust of a spiraling rocket alarm clock, into reality. My life is going to drastically change. All our lives are. We have a great routine right now and I see the end is near…
Right now, my husband wakes up around 7 or 7:15 and takes a shower; usually by the time my husband has gotten dressed, my son’s door opens and my 2 ‘guys’ head downstairs and it’s ‘guy time’. They have breakfast together, the paper is read, a cartoon is watched, they talk about their day ahead. I, in the meantime, take an extra snooze or just get up and get ready for the day; my husband leaves for work about 8:15 and my son and I make it to his preschool, a mile down the street, by 9am.
Some days, we have even had to wake our son up at 8am… and his bedtime is 7:30pm. We like our sleep in this family. But starting in September- SCHOOL STARTS at 8am!
That means we all are going to have to get up before 7am, in the dreaded 6am hour! ARGH!
My husband looked at me last night when I was telling him this and just remarked, “Yeah, I was wondering when this would come to an end.” I looked at him and knew too; we have a great set-up right now, we’re busy, but not crazy…
We’re all going to have to readjust to starting our days an hour earlier… This is a big deal to me, but more importantly, I hope it’s not too big of a deal to my son. School didn’t start at 8am when I went to grade school…
And for kindergarten- I went to half-day kindergarten- and we had NAPTIME!
My husband joked with his co-worker about this and the guy replied, “8am… I drop my kids off at their high school at 7.”
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I am so not-a-morning person and I love my sleep… I’m going to have to start going to bed at 9… or maybe I’ll just start going to bed after I tuck my son in, I always have my pajamas on anyway…
What’s going on? Since when is the whole world up-and-running around before 8? When did this happen?
No wonder people are tired.
