A Mom's Mirage: The Perfect Babysitter

5 This isn't easy to admit: I need a babysitter.  I need someone to watch my nine month old baby in my home for a few hours week.  I don't think this is such an outlandish need. I realize that at age 28 I'm often seen as scandalously young for being a mother in the DC-area and it wasn't that long ago that I was a teenage babysitter myself.  Even more recently I worked as a nanny. Read: I HAVE BEEN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT SEA.  I'm having a doozy of time being on the other side of THIS table. I just don't know where to look or how to find an affordable, clean, trustworthy person to watch my little baby while I sit in the other room and do some writing.

I'm also a stay-at-home-mom and I am having the hardest time rationalizing that I might need a little help.  It's also hard when people don't understand that any mother, even a stay-at-home-mom might need a few hours sans child to use both hands at once! I feel like the options are endless but I don't even know where to begin.

I cannot afford the fancy-schmancy nanny agency for which I used to work.  But the alternative of a kid from my neighborhood just doesn't give me the warm and fuzzy safe feeling that a mother needs.

I don't know WHAT to say about the flier that appeared at my door last week.  Across the top of the page it reads _Day care kids_ in three different fonts!  And it continues to say: "if you need take care your kids please call me i had experience for 20 years if you want reference let knows my phone number is ... my name is ..."  I swear I am not even making any of this up. I realize that good marketing skills do not necessarily have any relevance to childcare skills, nor does a good care-giver need to be an English major, but a more thorough working knowledge of the spell check button would help.  So I'm ever the elitist ... I'm allowed, this is MAH BABY we are talking about.

Are my options really an overqualified but highly trustworthy twenty-dollar-an-hour agency-sponsored nanny or this? There must be something in between.  For now I'll be staying up late to write and frantically typing during the day, praying that my son sleeps for longer than half an hour at a time.
