Tits & Ass
catchy title, huh? No, this is not about porn, but thought I would capture your attention. This is my favorite song from The Chorus Line.
Yesterday, I took my four and six year old daughters to see the revival of The Chorus Line, playing in San Francisco and soon to make it's way back to Broadway.
I digress... growing up right outside of New York City, my parents would make it a monthly tradition (or it seemed like a monthly tradition) to drive into New York City and expose us to all the memorable musicals. I reflect and remember seeing Annie, Les Miserable, The Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, Oklahoma, West Side Story (and many more) at a very young age. Loving the theater as a little girl, I imagined and wished that one day, I could be on stage performing. The only problem was that I couldn't sing or dance. I still can't.
As we entered the Curan Theater, I could see people staring at us with that expression "I can't believe you are taking young children to such provocative show". My response is that I knew most of the edgy and inappropriate songs (like Tits and Ass) would go right over their head. My goal was that they would experience that 'magical' excitement that I had as a young girl when listening and singing to these musicals. I hope that my daughter's will cherish these memories of watching theater with mommy and grandma the remainder of their lives. I wish that as they become young women, mothers, executives, dancers (whatever THEY want to be) they have a deep appreciation of the arts and theater. Both little girls were able to sit through a two hour musical, not interrupt the audience and keep smiles on their face the whole performance. They were simply mesmerized with the show! When The Chorus Line was over, they told me that their favorite part was when the singers came out in the end dancing around in all those sparkly costumes. J. said that it was "sad that not all the performers could be picked at the end" - yes, she has compassion.
They sang "One Singular Sensation" the entire car ride home and now want to be Broadway performers or ballet dancers when they grow up. Sadly, they inherited our terrible vocal skills - maybe they can be a dancer. In the mean time, I will keep exposing them to theater, even if it is not NYC musicals. These are the compromises we make living in Silicon Valley....
By the way, the San Francisco performance of The Chorus Line was absolutely incredible and stellar - it was a first class performance, worthy of Broadway in NYC. The cast was amazing and captured our love and attention for two hours without an intermission. I highly recommend all you moms in silicon valley take a break from high tech heaven and drive up to San Francisco for some great theater, with or without your kids!
