Swine Flu Hysteria: Why My Son May Not Go To Nursery School Next Week
My three year old son attends a local nursery school two days a week. He is a very social little boy, so he loves it, and I get a little break from his high energy antics so I live it, too! Unfortunately, I got a letter this morning when I dropped him off stating that he will not be permitted to attend school next week unless I can provide proof that he got two flu shots in the last six months. Am I angry? You betcha.
First of all, he had his flu shot in October, and the school has his most up-to-date immunization records. But he only got one. According to my pediatrician, who I called promptly, the only time two doses are given within six months is at the initial vaccination. Secondarily, there are no more flu vaccines available at our doctor's office this late in the year. Even if there were, this year's flu vaccine wouldn't protect from swine flu because it arose from a mutation.
According to the multiple emails we've received from the school's administration this week, parents have been calling the school with questions regarding their vaccination and sick policies. I understand that it's important to protect everyone, especially kids, from all types of illnesses, but there haven't been any confirmed cases of swine flu in our area yet. With the heightened awareness regarding possible outbreaks, almost everyone is being more vigilant about hand washing and sanitation in general.
So why don't we drop the hysteria for the time being. Educate yourself and your family (Here's some info from the CDC), wash your hands, and please, for the love of god, let my kid go to school!
