The (Self) Worth of the At-Home Mom

As a mom, I'm worth about $171,647 a year and responsible for the physical and emotional well being of two human beings.   Serious stuff to be sure.  But what about my own worth?  My husband has an incredible job that gives him the opportunity to really use all the knowledge and experience he's honed professionally.  Every day he has stories of how the project he's on is turning around and shaping up.  At the end of every week he can look back and list bullet points of how he's improved procedures, fixed code, and averted a crisis.  And they give him a paycheck to boot.

I change diapers.  All.  Week.  Long.

I've just spent a good chunk of time reading The Crazy Chronicles, a series of posts telling the story of a mom who was recently committed to a mental institution for attempted suicide. This is not the story of a severely disturbed person. This is the story of you. The story of me. The story of any Mom.

Crystal's ordeal is frightening as well as inspiring. Because, honestly? A LOT of us moms have ghosts in our closets. A LOT of us feel overwhelmed. A LOT of us want to cry out for help. But instead we look at our lives - our comfy suburban lives - and wonder what in hell we have to complain about. We feel guilty for feeling anything other than domestic bliss. We internalize it and shoulder it and we just. move. on.

But they know that nothing beats strolling the boardwalks on the Jersey shore, hiking along the Delaware River, or rooting for the New Jersey Devils. These quintessential Jersey Girls will show you far more than the concrete, iron and rubber that you'll see in the opening credits of Sopranos.

If you live so close to the shore, why do you go out of state to go to the beach?

I can't tell you how many times I've heard this question. Mostly from my co-workers, who are spread out all over the U.S. and Canada, and some of my friends too. Especially those who don't live near an ocean. They are insistent that living close to the beach means you MUST LIVE at the beach, right?

I confess... I guess I do take the Jersey shore for granted.

It is not like we don't have children to raise, spouses to contend with, homes to organize, laundry to fold, or jobs that demand our focus and energy 24/7. It's not like our lives are THAT busy.... Oh pish, what is one more blog to add to our community of mommy bloggers?
