Get Real: Octuplets mom getting a reality show?

-4 Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about Nadya Suleman, the single mother with six children who gave birth to octuplets last month.  And hey – if you really have been living under a rock, you might be in luck since you’ll be able to hear all about the Suleman family on their reality show that’s being rumored to be in negotiations.  That’s right – stay tuned and you could get an up-close look at the life of the unemployed woman being called “Octomom” and her amazing ability to turn disability payments and student loans into food, shelter, clothing and medicine for fourteen children under the age of 7. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if it belongs on a reality network or the Sci-Fi channel.

According to a spokesperson for Suleman, the 33-year-old mother from Southern California is fielding numerous offers to star in her own reality series.  But the question is, would anyone watch?  According to my highly scientific survey (girlfriends over drinks, the woman standing in line behind me at Starbucks) most people are turned off by Suleman and her cavalier attitude at bringing eight babies into her already seemingly chaotic life, not to mention the fact that taxpayers will likely be footing the bill.  And what about the rumored Angelina Jolie fixation, and the obvious plastic surgery?  I may be wrong, but most ‘students’ I know aren’t using their loans for lip fillers.  The final feedback from my survey – all said they definitely would not watch a reality show featuring Suleman if their lives depended on it.  And this coming from a friend who once admitted to Tivo’ing an entire season of Pimp My Ride.

And it looks like the public in general is not warming to Suleman or the idea that she might be popping up on their TV screens.  TLC, the network that’s making a name for itself with reality shows about big families (Jon & Kate Plus 8, 17 and Counting) would be a perfect fit,  but it has reportedly already received several threats of a boycott if it airs a show featuring Suleman and her 14 children. Which is a good thing since it looks like the network's already got enough shows with numbers in their titles.

Note to producers: maybe you might want to find a more sympathetic subject.  I mean, when even your own mother calls your actions ‘reprehensible’ and tells the world you’re incapable of raising all those kids, do you really think the public will tune in?  Not me – I’m prepared to join the boycott of any network that churns out a show about the Adventures of Octomom and am swearing right here and now that I'll switch over to reruns of Baywatch before I give Suleman more than her fifteen minutes of fame. Which, by the way, I’ve extended to thirty just by writing this post. Damn her!
