The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night

J0295292 Because I am a sucker, I said yes.  My eleven year old daughter asked if she could have an "end of school year" sleepover.  She's never had a sleepover, mostly due to the fact that her older siblings have had sleepovers and they didn't go well.  The set of 13 year old boys who trashed my house at 4:15 a.m. pretty much sealed the deal.

But she begged, and she planned, and I was helpless in the face of her excitement.  And so I said yes. Even knowing that I need a lot of sleep, even knowing how poorly I do if I don't get enough sleep, and even knowing the possibility of what could happen, I still said yes.  Because I am a sucker.

It began well.  My older daughter helped set up a sleeping area on the floor, they picked movies and made snacks.  Only two girls were able to come - two girls she plays with just about every day.  No sweat, I figured.  They watched a movie, ate popcorn and two bags of chips, drank 2 bottles of soda, and generally had a great time.  At 10:30, I told them lights out. Remember that there are five other kids upstairs asleep and you've got to get up early to go home, I said.

All of you experienced parents out there know what's coming, don't you?

It was 11:30 when I went upstairs, after an hour of shushing. Midnight when my husband came home from work to find them pillow fighting.  2:15 a.m. when I heard them running through the house giggling, and 3:40 a.m. when they woke my youngest daughter - who came downstairs and cried, and then refused to go back to bed.  3:50 a.m. when I lost my mind and yelled.  They were up bright and early at 7, and I've already had two cups of coffee and a heavy dose of ibuprofen.

I tried.  I really did try.  I know how fun sleepovers are, and how excited my daughter was.  I just don't think my nerves can take it again.

This is an original Deep South Moms post.  When she's not dealing with preteens, teens and preschoolers, Carmen can be found avoiding the laundry at Mom to the Screaming Masses and bragging about her achievements at Thai boxing at The Elff Diet.
