Dusting Off My Resume, And Putting It Back
Last week I
had a screening call for a potential job. I've been with the same company for
seven years, and while I realize I am very lucky to have a working mom friendly
30-hour work week, I've got the seven-year itch when it comes to
the actual day-to-day type of work I do.
Either that, or I'm having an early mid-life crisis. But I digress.
As I dialed the number to speak to the interviewer, I had a very sobering
thought. I haven’t had a bona fide sit down job interview in more than seven
years. I suddenly felt very nervous. My palms were sweaty. And I wasn't
even doing a real live interview, just a screening call. Clearly I had lost my
touch.
What
happened to that zealous career girl from the 90s? The one with the closet full
of fabulous power suits? The one who flew on a corporate jet with the company
CEO? The one who attended board meetings? She had two babies and decided she'd
trade in climbing the corporate career ladder for a job at a small company. She
realized the value of a flexible schedule, willingly took a cut in salary so
she could work less and pick her daughter up school every day, and she never
looked back.…for the most part.
Some days I wonder what it would be like to be
a power suit working mama. Then I wake up to find one of my girls has a cold, and I e-mail my boss to let her know I need to work from home for the day. I'm not attending board meetings, but some days I get to work from home in my pjs.
The job opening had sounded like a potential fit, but as the
interview progressed I knew it just wasn’t right for me. But, still, I’m glad I took a
leap of faith, dusted off my resume, and put myself out there. It was a bit
humbling, but I realize that I am in the right place for now. Although
I’m not out climbing the corporate ladder, I’m pretty darn lucky.
