Under Cancellations: Christmas?

Dear Family & Friends,

I am writing to you today because I'd like to cancel Christmas this year. The economy is in the toilet and none of us has any money to spare. The thought of exchanging gifts is giving me heartburn and insomnia. 

The Christmas spirit, the one we knew as kids, is long gone. It's been exploited and pimped since mid-October each year so it's no wonder that the magic is lost. I feel the worst for our children; they've been robbed.

Somehow our economy has gotten wrapped up so tight in the success of monetizing holidays that everything from Easter to Halloween has lost its innocence. There are price tags dangling from the most holy of days on the Christian calendar and somehow that's okay. We just keep trudging onward like hungry sheep wearing blinders.

I propose that we take back Christmas by canceling it all together. Instead, let's come up with a new way to celebrate. Our new Christmas won't involve purchasing useless items or thankless gestures. It won't include showy displays or long lines or stress. It will be quiet and peaceful and concentrated - on each other and whatever higher power we believe in. It will be a day to reconnect and give back and not to wonder what we'll get.

Family, friends, I ask you to join me in canceling Christmas this year - at my house. We'll be serving a cozy dinner and chatting by the fire. We won't be exchanging gifts but we will be focused - on each other and what the day really means to us.

We'd love to have you but we understand if you are unable join us due to the holiday.
