At what age do children make social friendships? The kind of friendships
that take place out of school? When do the sleepovers and the "can
Tommy come over to play" start? Is it normal children without
siblings to have a hard time making friends?
Something tells me that I'm about to learn the hard way with my eight year old son what happens when making friends for a child isn't as easy as it looks or should be.

Not so long ago during my school days I
remember taking my report card home for my mother to see. Sometimes I
was proud to show it off and other times, well I could have done a
wee bit better. The fact is that doing well and trying my hardest was
something that was expected of me. It was a “you must” not a
“well if you feel like trying” issue. Cut and dry, black and
white... do your best was the only option.
When we did well the most we could
expect was a pat on the back or a verbal “job well done”. Never
did we receive and rewards, especially monetary rewards for doing
something that was just plain expected of us. Things seemed to have
change quite a bit since I was a kid that's for sure.

Wait a minute, what did I just hear on the radio? Did you hear that Chicago? It appears that our holiday season is underway already, like it or not the holidays are here. Is it just me or do the holidays creep up earlier each year? Before you know it, we will be getting ready for the holidays in May. This isn’t too far stretched since our local hardware store have had Christmas trees on display since September. Seriously, how soon is too soon to start getting in the jolly good spirit?
Sure the stores have been gearing up their decorations since October and 93.9 lite FM has already begun their annual switch to their "all Christmas, all the time" broadcasts, but that doesn't make me ready for this holiday in the least bit.
While dashing through the mall two weeks ago I was simply shocked to see that Santa and his happy little elves had already been living in their plastic candy cane village.

November 4, 2008, a date that so many
Americans have been waiting for. A date that is sure to bring changes
(hopefully) and more controversies. Changes in our government (after eight long years)and a
change in the white house. Our country and our future is
at stake and now there are just a few short hours left before such a
historical election takes place . Many early votes have been recorded
and just
this past weekend a visit from the Democratic hopeful was in my
neck of the woods. Although not in attendance, I know that history
was taking place just a few miles up the road.
You know how they say that the first
time is always the hardest ? I truly believe it because the
heaviness of uncertainty is crushing on my worried mind. Worried that
my choice will be a bad one because after all, I am a voting virgin.

Of course the current state of our nation's economy could be the leading cause of depression these days, but for me that isn't the case. Quite frankly I am not even sure how I got to this point in my depression, it is as if the lights just started to dim. Could it be that I don't get anytime for myself? Did it start with me not caring anymore about my once loved job? Was it me realizing that I'll never have another baby and getting to be a stay at home mommy again is just a dream? What ever the cause or the reason, depression is kickin' my butt and it is starting to hurt. Unfortunately it is not only hurting me, but my friends and family have suffered as well.
It must be depression right? There is the uncontrollable crying, the sick feeling in the bottom of my stomach when I look at myself (gaining more weight and crying more) or the desire to do nothing but sleep. Where did my energy go anyways? Sure I'm moody by nature, I'm a Gemini for goodness sake, but as I read more online and take tests, all the pieces are falling into place. Loss of interest, inability to concentrate, irrational self-guilt, all of it hits home. The lights flicker back on, for a bit anyways.

It's that time of year again with the cooler weather, newly sharpened pencils and loaded backpacks. Oh yeah, it's back to school time. If you have school aged children in the home you too may know what else it's time for, the homework blues. Did you know Chicago is known for the blues? Is this what they are singing about, homework? If they are parents they would be, that's for sure. Right now the blues are being sung so loudly at home that even the dog is howling along!
Whether its the whimsical whining between math problems or the soulful sighs after each spelling word, homework can be challenging for both the child and the parents. Tempers flare fast and frustrations can reach an all time high. After having all summer off, getting back into the swing of things is a hard adjustment to make at any age, even for parents.
